glad of his leather boots too with the sort of terrain they were going to have to negotiate, with the sodden ground hiding stabbing thorns and poisonous biting insects.
Kurn was also down to his vest-shirt and combats. His close-cropped blond hair glistened and his face shone with sweat. But where the lieutenant was thin and wiry, Kurn's sleeveless shirt merely emphasized his massive physique even more – the bulging biceps, the clearly defined pectoral muscles, his thick neck. He was also a good head taller than the lieutenant, standing in his high-laced combat boots. He had smeared his face and arms with green mud, Tremayne assumed for camouflage purposes, but it made him look even less human and more like an ogryn.
They were both soaked to the skin with sweat in the humid atmosphere, and were making fast work of their water rations simply to keep themselves suitably hydrated.
They moved off again but hadn't even reached the foot of the gully when Tremayne froze.
'There,' he hissed back at his bodyguard. 'I definitely heard something then.'
The lieutenant suddenly realised how exposed the two of them were in the bottom of the gully. Jungle fighting wasn't what he was used to. He had honed his combat skills in the derelict domes of Volcanus Hive, as had Kurn. They were street fighters, not Catachan death world veterans.
Tremayne's sharp mind processed quickly. The close-packed trees above and ahead of them, and the winding paths between, were not so different from the crumbling streets of a battle-wrought hive. So surely the rules of engagement out here weren't so different either.
'On my mark, we sprint for the end of the gully. You give covering fire behind. If we get pinned down,' he scanned the boulder-strewn defile, 'take cover behind that outcrop.' He pointed quickly with the barrel of his laspistol, clicking the safety off as he did so.
Then they both heard it: the crack of a dry twig snapping underfoot.
'Run!' Tremayne hissed.
The two men, ACG officer and indentured trooper, sprinted for the end of the gully, Tremayne ignoring the sharp pain in his knee.
There was a commotion in the trees at the top of the bank to their left and solid slug fire whickered along the trench of the gully after them. The greenskins had found their target.
The first of the feral orks burst from between the trees in front of Tremayne, howling in insane glee, a monstrous machete held in the meaty paw of its right hand. While the greenskin was still in the air Tremayne fired his laspistol, the zinging high-powered shot hitting the creature in the arm. The ork hit the ground, howling in pain, and dropped the machete. The lieutenant took aim again. There was the roar of an autogun opening up behind him and the ork fell, arms flailing, as solid shot rounds opened up its chest in a spray of alien blood.
But it was only the first. The forest seemed to explode around them as greenskinned
